Zero Oil Urad Dal is Healthy and Simple Gujarati Dal recipe which can be an excellent everyday recipe. This dal can be enjoyed with hot phulka or steamed rice or Bjara roti.  This popular Gujarati Dal is prepared without Oil (not even for Tadka) and with Tomatoes, Garlic and various Indian spices.

White Lentils, OR Split URAD DAL

White Lentils start life as whole black urad beans which are then skinned and split. These are very special lentils, used to make some of India’s best loved dieshes, from poppadoms and dosas to idlis and dhoklas.

What can be made from urad dal?

Urad dal is widely used to make delightful South-Indian snacks ranging from paper-thin dosa, spongey uttapam, fluffy idlis, deep-fried vadas and crispy appe. The ever-popular Medu vada makes for a scrumptious breakfast when served with chutney and sambhar.

Is urad dal healthy?

Urad dal possesses excellent antioxidant properties that make it beneficial for the heart, liver and kidneys. In addition, it has a low glycemic index and high dietary fibre content that may be helpful as a good food substance for patients with diabetes and those on weight control diets.

Urad Dal is low in GI and fat and high in protein and fibre. White lentil consumed via Zero Oil Urad Dal keeps our stomach full for a long period of time. Thus preventing overeating and helping us in the process of weight loss.

Zero oil Gujarati Urad Dal Recipe

Ingredients
  

  • 1/2 cup urad dal split black lentils
  • 1 tbsp chana dal split whole gram lentils
  • 2-3 cloves chopped garlic lehsun
  • 1 medium size chopped tomato
  • 2 chopped green chillies
  • 1 tbsp red chilli powder
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder haldi
  • 3/4 tbsp Coriander Powder
  • 1/4 tbsp Cumin powder
  • 2 tbsp chopped coriander dhania
  • salt to taste
  • 1 cup Water for boiling
  • 1 cup Water to simmer
  •  

Instructions
 

  • Clean, wash and soak the urad dal and chana dal in enough water in a bowl for 15 minutes. Drain well.
    1/2 cup urad dal, 1 tbsp chana dal
  • Combine the urad dal and 1 cups of water in a pressure cooker, mix well and pressure cook for 2 whistles on high flame and 8 mins on low flame.
    1/2 cup urad dal, 1 cup Water
  • Allow the steam to escape before opening the lid.
  • Add the tomatoes, garlic, green chilli , salt, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, coriander powder, cumin powder and 1 cup of water and mix well.
    2-3 cloves chopped garlic, 1 medium size chopped tomato, 2 chopped green chillies, 1 tbsp red chilli powder, 1/2 tsp turmeric powder, 3/4 tbsp Coriander Powder, 1/4 tbsp Cumin powder, salt to taste, 1 cup Water
  • Bring to boil and cook on a slow flame for 15 minutes, while stirring occasionally.
  • In last 2 minutes of 15 mins, add the coriander and mix well.
    2 tbsp chopped coriander
  • Serve hot.
