Gujarati Style Chawli ki Sabji (Gujarati Lobia Curry)

Gujarati Style Chawli ki sabji is a Tangy and Sweet preparation of black eyed peas (lobia) in Tomato gravy.

Ingredients
  

  • ½ cup Black Eyed Peas Chawli / Lobia peas
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • ½ tsp mustard seeds
  • ¼ tsp asafoetida
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp Ginger Garlic Chilli paste
  • 1 chopped tomato
  • ½ tsp Red Chilli powder
  • 1 tsp Coriander Powder
  • ½ tsp Cumin powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tbsp jaggery
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • ¼ tsp garam masala
  • Chopped coriander leaves
  • Water

Instructions
 

  • Soak Chawli for 7-8 hours.
    ½ cup Black Eyed Peas
  • Add 1 cup of water, salt and pressure cook for 3-4 whistles. Ensure Chawli is cooked properly

  • Heat oil in a pan. Once oil is hot, add mustard seeds.
    2 tbsp oil, ½ tsp mustard seeds
  • Once mustard seeds splutter, add asafoetida Ginger Garlic Chilli Paste and saute for 1-2 minutes.
    ¼ tsp asafoetida, 1 tsp Ginger Garlic Chilli paste
  • Add Turmeric powder and saute for 1 more minute, then add chopped tomato and Mix well.
    ½ tsp turmeric powder, 1 chopped tomato
  • Add salt and cook tomatoes until they are soft followed by coriander powder and cummin powder, red chilli powder and saute for 2 minutes more.
    1 chopped tomato, 1 tsp Coriander Powder, ½ tsp Cumin powder, Salt to taste, ½ tsp Red Chilli powder
  • Add 1/2 cup water, Jaggery and Chawli Beans. Give it a good mix. After 1 minute, cover with lid and let it cook for another 3-4 minutes.
    1 tbsp jaggery, Water, ½ cup Black Eyed Peas
  • Add Garam masala, give it a mix and let curry boil for 2 more minutes
    ¼ tsp garam masala
  • Switch of the flame and Squeeze a lemon, chopped coriander and give it a final mix.
    1 tsp lemon juice, Chopped coriander leaves
  • Thats it. Serve Gujarati Chawli nu shaak with Rice or Rotis
