Homemade Instant Khoya: A Quick and Easy Recipe

Khoya, also known as mawa, is a quintessential ingredient in many Indian sweets, desserts and some curries. This rich, creamy milk product is made by reducing milk to a thick, fudge-like consistency.

Original recipe of preparing khoya can be time-consuming, requiring hours of slow cooking. But what if you’re short on time or can’t find khoya at your local store?

That’s where this instant khoya recipe comes in handy.

Ingredients: Simple and Easily Available

For this quick khoya recipe, you only need four ingredients: milk, clarified butter (ghee), milk powder, and powdered sugar. These are items that are often already available in our kitchens, making this recipe incredibly convenient.

  • Milk: Provides the base and moisture for the khoya.
  • Clarified Butter (Ghee): Adds richness and enhances the flavor.
  • Milk Powder: The key ingredient that helps thicken the mixture quickly.
  • Powdered Sugar: A touch of sweetness that balances the richness.

Method: From Start to Finish in 15 Minutes

  1. Mixing the Ingredients: Start by mixing the milk and ghee. You can microwave this mixture for 30 seconds or warm it gently on the stove.
  2. Combining with Dry Ingredients: In a non-stick pan, combine the milk powder and powdered sugar. Add the warmed milk and ghee mixture, stirring constantly.
  3. Cooking: Cook the mixture on low heat, stirring continuously until it thickens to a dough-like consistency. This should take about 5 minutes.
  4. Ready to Use: Your instant khoya is now ready! Use it immediately in your favorite Indian sweets or store it in the refrigerator for later use.

Cooking Tips and Substitutions

  • Milk Powder: If you don’t have milk powder, you can try using condensed milk, but remember to reduce the amount of sugar.
  • Ghee: For a vegan version, substitute ghee with coconut oil, though the flavor will be slightly different.

Serving Suggestions

  • Khoya is incredibly versatile. Use it in traditional sweets like peda, halwa, or kheer.
  • You can also add it to savory dishes to create a rich, creamy texture.
  • Whether you’re preparing a festive treat or just indulging in a homemade dessert, this instant khoya recipe will save you time without compromising on taste.
