About Chutti Moong Ni Dal :
Gujarati Chutti Moong Ni Dal is a dry and light preparation with basic Guajarati masalas. I can eat it everyday. Unlike the usual dal preparations, this is a dry dish made with moong dal (moong ni dal, or in gujarati મગ ની છુટ્ટી દાળ) pepped up with a simple tempering and common spice powders.
Chutta/Chutti means separate, and one of my favourite part about this Gujarati delicacy is to feel each grain of the moong dal while eating. In order to achieve this, you must soak the dal for sufficient time and cook it for minimal time with just the required amount of water, as described in our recipe video. Enjoy this Chutti Moong Ni Dal with puran poli, rice and gujarati kadhi (sweet and sour preparation).

Chutti Mug Ni Dal recipe
Ingredients
- 1 cup small yellow lentils
- 2 tbsp oil
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 2 pcs green chilis slitted
- 1 spring curry leaves
- 2 pcs dry red chilies
- ¼ tsp hing asafoetida
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- Salt as per taste
- ¼ cup coriander leaves chopped
Instructions
- To make mag ni dal, wash and soak 1 cup dal in warm water for at least 20 mins. Drain and keep aside.1 cup small yellow lentils
- Heat the oil in a non-stick kadhai and add 1 tsp mustard seeds.2 tbsp oil, 1 tsp mustard seeds
- When the seeds crackle, add 2 green chillies, 1 spring curry leaves, 2 dry red chllies and 1/4 tsp asafoetida (hing), 1 tsp turmeric powder and sauté on a medium flame for a few seconds.2 pcs green chilis, 1 spring curry leaves, 2 pcs dry red chilies, ¼ tsp hing, 1 tsp turmeric powder
- Add the yellow moong dal, salt, sprinkle some water and mix well. Cover and cook on a medium flame for 8 to 10 minutes or until dal is cooked. Do not overcook the dal as soggy dal will not taste good.1 cup small yellow lentils, Salt as per taste
- Remove from the flame, add chopped coriander leaves and mix well.¼ cup coriander leaves chopped
- Serve Chutti mag ni dal hot with Kadhi and puran poli or Chapati (Roti).
