Tomato upma is tangy, spicy and delicious recipe of upma which is complete from flavors of tomatoes and spices. This is one of the goto Breakfast in an Indian Kitchen, because it is easy and prepared in no time. At times, it is also served as a night time light meal.

Upma and Poha are two breakfast or dinner dishes we make generally as they are easy and quick, to put together and all ingredients are always readily available in an Indian kitchen.

We make many different varieties of Upmas in our kitchen, but this Upma recipe is one of my all time favourites. Reason? I like tangyness of Tomatoes and Lemon with a hint of Ghee (Clarified Butter) and a fresh aroma of Coriander leaves, blend together makes a storm.

Below, we will try to answer few of the frequently asked questions on Tomato Upma recipe OR Upma recipe in general.

How Tomato Upma Tastes?

The recipe I am sharing is a slightly spicy version of Upma. Sometimes, we add Sambhar Powder to this recipe of Tomato Upma and at times even Vangi Masala powder also make it to this dish. Experiment with your Upma recipe, we are sure you will love it. But, to maintain authenticity I have added Red Chilli Powder in Tomato Upma recipe. If you are not a fan of Spicy Upma, we suggest you skip the red chilli powder.

Is Tomato Upma healthy?

A bowl of upma has fiber, vitamins, and wholesome fats. It is low in ldl cholesterol and calories which makes it a wholesome meal and allows you to have a balanced diet. Traditional Upma is prepared by using semolina and it is full of iron. This recipe of Tomato Upma makes it much more healthier since tomatoes are rich in vitamin C and potassium.

Which Rava to use while making Upma?

Rawa often mixed up with Bombay Rava, Suji, Idli Rava or Lapsi Rava. We can make upma with many different types of Rava. But in this recipe of Tomato Upma, we will be using Bombay Rava or so called as Suji which is easily available in Indian Grocery Store or Indian Supermarkets.

What are the suggested accompaniments to Tomato Upma?

  • Serve hot with a drizzle of ghee on top.
  • A lemon pickle or lemon wedges goes really well with this Upma.
  • Last but not the least, Coconut chutney is always a goto choice.
